Day 10, Sunday June 2nd:
The morning started off sadly by saying farewell to Max as
we dropped him off at the San Antonio Airport. We then took drive through Devil's Backbone for some scenic views.
From there we went straight to Austin, TX for “Sunday Funday”. We were too early to check into the hotel so we went straight to downtown Austin. After parking in a garage we looked around and started walking. We had heard that South Congress Street was the place to be. To get to where we wanted to go, we crossed a bridge that offered a great view of the park we were in, the river, and the city. Along the way we also came across many interesting bars. One of them was a beach volleyball bar where there was sand and volleyball nets with people playing in the back.
When we got to the part of the street we were looking for we saw it was full of food trucks, cafés, music, and shops. We sat down at an outdoor café which had a live band starting for brunch. We hung out there for a couple of hours drinking coffee, eating breakfast tacos, and enjoying the music. Many people congregated to this, young and old, and many people brought their dogs.
Afterwards we resumed walking and came across a small outdoor market with a food truck called “Hey…You Gonna Eat or What?”. Here Jeremy ordered the Monte Cristo which is the trucks signature dish. After speaking with the Husband and wife preparing the food he dug in. It was one of the favorite meals consumed on the trip so far. Keith and Adam tried some and agreed.
From there we went through the many stores in the area, which were all strangely unique. Being “unique” is apparently something that Austin prides itself on. We stopped into stores with strange sculptures, things made out of garbage, a costume store, and saw a lot of interesting art.
Eventually it started to get close to dinner time so we headed back to the hotel to check in. We decided to go back to the city afterwards and went back to the bridge where we started. Every night under this bridge, as the sun sets, bats pour out into the sky over the river. Watching the cloud of bats emerge, we spoke with many locals and got lots of pictures.
After that we went to grab a late dinner on 6th street was recommended for its liveliness. Lively was an understatement as people were at the bars and celebrating like it was a Friday Night in Boston after a Bruins game. We got dinner and hung out for a little while before heading back to the hotel to get some rest before the long trip to follow the next day.
