Day 19, Tuesday June 11th:
We woke up at 5am after a long night of arguing what time it
was. We traveled back to Horseshoe Bend
for some beautiful photos of the sunrise.
At the bend we witnessed some small birds that were so fast that it sounded like a small jet passing by your ear. From Horseshoe Bend we took a three hour drive to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
We found a couple of small trails which led to some awe inspiring views.
After a respectful amount of time at the North Rim we decided to try our luck in Las Vegas for what we were hoping would be a quick stop to make all the money back we have spent on the trip thus far. The trip to Vegas was shorter than we had actually anticipated due to the fact that we lost all of our money in a matter of minutes. Our wallets lighter and spirits deflated, we shuffled our feet and bid farewell to Sin City. We then headed for Rachel, NV, right outside of Area 51, to hopefully see some super secret government alien experiments. We stayed at the world famous Little A’le Inn, the bar/hotel that was featured in the movie Paul.
On the drive out we saw the most incredible sunset which looked like the scene from Independence Day where the UFOs were entering the atmosphere.
Arriving just in time to grab some dinner at the diner, we quickly met our hosts and a couple of the local townspeople. Rachel, Nevada consists of 47 people, 5 of which were at the restaurant; our bartender, the chef, two small children, and a man named Ken.
Ken was the most effervescent of the civilians we met, being surprised at times that we had not heard of him. Multiple times throughout the night he referred to himself as “Agent 51”, which seems to agree with his license plate. Ken told us many stories about his life over the course of the night, and it was one of the most absurd and interesting lives we have ever head. Here are just a few of the facts we learned about his life:

His mother was intimately involved with a member
of Jimmy Carter’s secret service agent and brother, and stayed at the former
President’s Georgia home.

He comes from a family that invented stainless
steel, has ties to the Wright brothers, and had a big impact in the industrial
revolution.

He is a former professional accordionist,
scientist, and pilot
·
He has been abducted multiple times and once
flew a UFO
·
He is friends with David Duchovney on Facebook
After a nice dinner, getting to know the people of Rachel,
Ken invited us back to his home for some Jack Daniels, which was provided to
him by the CIA, and some late night piano lessons. After a long discussion amongst ourselves we
decided to go ahead and try to meet up with him, but had trouble finding his
place. After some driving around we decided
to get back on the main road in search for a nice area to pull over and take
some shots at astrophotography and lit up a few fireworks that we had leftover from New Mexico.
Afterwards we went back to our trailer like cabin to a get a good night of sleep before another long travel day to follow.

Hmmm.... A close encounter of the absurd kind, eh?... Was it Fate that you got lost and couldn't find your way back to Agent 51's place? Or perhaps something more strictly Arbitrary? One can only shake one's head and tend the garden...
