Day 11, Monday June 3rd:

We left the hotel at 5am in an attempt to fit in as many activities that day as possible.  Our first stop was Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.  Along the way we stopped at a small town store where we found lots of interesting items, and began to realize this area of the country is a little different than the rest.

Once we made it to the Caverns we descended down into the darkness, and what we saw words cannot describe.  A 1.25 mile walk through the Caverns in the dark had new and breath taking sites in every section we walked through.  Stalactites hanging from the ceiling, holes and caves that go further than one could see, and overall interesting and beautiful rocks that have only been effected by nature.

From there we went to Roswell, NM in search of what we could find out about aliens.  What we found out was very little…  Roswell mainly consists of many stores filled with alien gimmicks and a UFO museum.  Unfortunately nearly everything  was closed.  At the closed museum we ran into a duo of fellow weary travelers  who met each other in Thailand and have been traveling cross country in the opposite direction.  We grabbed some burgers from a local restaurant and made our way to the Bottomless Lake State Park where we would be camping for the evening.

We drove out into the middle of the dessert until the GPS had told us we had arrived.  We had not arrived...  Not knowing where exactly to go we decided to keep driving.  After another 5 miles or so we came across a rusted broken sign that said welcome to Bottomless Lakes which led down a road which had a broken rusted gate lying in the middle of a dirt road.  We decided it would be best to not go that way...  Luckily further down the road we found a more official sign leading the way to the campground… or so we thought.  We got to a ranger’s office where we could check in.  Unfortunately it had closed a couple hours earlier.  The sun was setting which left little time to find our site and to make things worse there was an awful smell in the area.  We continued to drive around until we found a pond which we thought could be what we were looking for...  It was not…  After taking a few photos we kept looking for an official site. After an hour of driving through the area we had finally stumbled across some campgrounds where the “camp host” had an RV parked with a light up UFO on the outside.  We set up camp in which turned out to be the wrong area… Camping in Roswell clearly was not our forte..  A park ranger came by to check on us thinking we were up to no good.  We packed everything back up and found our site thanks to a map provided by the ranger.  We finished setting up camp and finally settled in at 9:30pm.  The good thing about this site was that it was left in almost complete darkness allowing a great view of the stars and the opportunity for some great astrophotography photos.  In the end this day was a great success and we were able to witness some amazing starscapes before calling it a night.
