Day 12, Tuesday June 4th:
We woke up this morning in time to see the sunrise and take
a couple more photos.
We then set out for what would be a very long day of travel to San Diego, CA. After about an hour of driving we decided to stop at a large Indian store which had fireworks, clothing, ceramics, ect.. We ended up spending an hour in the store as we kept on deciding to buy more things and had some good conversations with the store’s staff. We found out that Keith had a history of fireworks enthusiasm which led to some interesting conversation and some excellent purchases.
We left the store and pulled over to an area on the side of the road which we deemed safe to set off some of the purchased fireworks. Although this took place in the daylight it was still quite the sight to see. After a couple more delays for food and gas we finally got back on the road to travel another 30 minutes before our next stop at the White Sands National Monument. This is a part of the dessert in New Mexico which is completely covered by rolling hills of pearl white sand. Golf clubs in hand we teed off from the top of the dunes sending balls sailing into the distance.
After some photos of the area we began the long trek towards San Diego. Along the way were several straight strips of highway for over 300 miles stopping occasionally for cool scenery.
We crossed a booth with border patrol although they did not seem interested in us and let us pass quickly. In the dessert you could see small wind cyclones of sand spinning around threatening to grow into dangerous and storms. At 1am we had arrived in San Diego at our friend Dan’s house who was graciously waiting up for us. We all sat outside and had a beer catching up about what we’ve all been up to. Then it was off to bed to get some rest before the next two days full of activities in the area.

Looks like you came up a little short of the green and in the sand trap, after all. Pity the scorpions! Great blog. Loving following your great adventure. "Carry on!"
