Day 23, Saturday June 15th:
We woke up early in an attempt to get a full day in San
Francisco before Evan had to leave. We
drove north on the PCH in an attempt to see different parts of the coast. Unfortunately the morning was overcast so
there was little to see. We arrived in
San Francisco at 9am in time to grab coffee at Philz (a place that Team OCD
member Adam had recommended). The coffee
there was strong for Jeremy’s liking, but Evan and Keith seemed to have a good
time. We hung out at the coffee shop and
tried to start planning out our day and get some friendly advice from the
couple next to us. After some relaxation
we started we started to walk around the city.
Evan’s internal GPS (Guessing Positioning System) led the way and we
soon found ourselves lost and in a less desirable part of the city. We then decided to walk in the opposite
direction where we found a mall like area where many people were
congregated.
We ventured into a six story mall and got some food. Following some decadent treats and curved escalator rides, we checked into our hostel. Once Keith and Jeremy were all settled into their hostel environment we set out to meet up with Evan’s cousin Brad. Brad was kind enough to pick us up and drive us around the city.
We went to the Golden Gate Bridge which was a short visit due to the weather and got a decent view of Alcatraz.
From there we went to Fisherman’s Wharf where we spent most of our day. We walked up and down the coast stopping in many shops and checking out street performances.
One of the stores we stopped in was a technological massage shop where Jeremy and Keith got water pressure massage treatment and Evan went to the oxygen bar.
Feeling relaxed we settled for a mediocre seafood dinner before Brad dropped us back off at the hostel. It was then time to bid Evan a sad farewell, during the drive over to the airport he cracked his first smile of the trip while reminiscing of the long week we shared together. Evan will be missed just as the other journeymen before him. Jeremy and Keith arrived back at the hostel to do laundry and ended up meeting one of their roommates Nathan who was traveling from New Zealand. They all decided o go downstairs for a few drinks which quickly turned into a late drinking night. Everyone was very friendly and we got to know people from all over the world and learn about their travels. Word to the wise, do NOT lump people from New Zealand and Australia together! Aussie does not equal Kiwi….
